Sharpening the Sword

Demystifying Concentration, Mindfulness and Emptiness

June 16-18, 2026 6am-3pm MST on Zoom

In this retreat we will demystify the terms concentration, mindfulness and emptiness through our direct inquiry and experience. Being too loose with their definitions can allow for dullness in meditation to creep in while getting clear on them can sharpen it and help the whole practice become more interesting.

Yes! We can use the mind’s intelligence to help us take deeper interest and joy in our practice!

Do you have ways to assess how good your concentration is? If not, are you complaining about “monkey mind” but not addressing it?

What is mindfulness, actually, and how has popularizing it in the west influenced your own practice standards?

How many ways has the Buddhist tradition used the term emptiness? (Sneak peak: 4 at least, but I’ll try and find 5!)

Can sitting with a screen in your face all day help you? We shall see!

In this three day retreat, suitable for meditators at all levels of experience, we’ll unfold a system of practice which begins with concentration instruction and ways to assess how you are doing. This will prepare us for deeper explorations of mindfulness and emptiness practices.  Come experience for yourself what an empty mind, heart and body might imply for us in terms of our own freedom.

There will be talks, Q & A, guided periods of meditation and plenty of silent sitting.

“I got the image of you as a composer in the space, more than as a teacher or coach.  The space is open to be led by you or me at any given moment. Sort of like co pilots, which feels really good"
